Jimmy McGill (Bob O’Malley) from Better Call Saul Season 1 is a man with a plan and a very interesting past. He has a plan to become a lawyer, but he needs to earn his stripes first, so he agrees to work for a law firm named Hamlin, Hamlin & McGill. He’s not the only one who has a plan for the future though, his partner Chuck (Michael McKean) has something up his sleeve too. Their boss Kim Wexler (Rhea Seehorn) is also trying to make her mark in the world of law by trying to help Jimmy get his license. The rest of the firm though is not so sure about the good name of Hamlin, Hamlin & McGill, and they’re secretly helping Jimmy’s rival, Chuck, get his law license. It’s a tricky situation and Jimmy’s going to have to pull out all the stops in order to stay ahead of the game and keep his job and his plan for the future on track. Or is his future already lost?
Reporting on Better Call Saul Season 1 Episode 1 is challenging. As a reviewer, you want to spend your time on the things that the show is trying to accomplish. There are many moving parts here and the series is just getting started. So, let’s take a look at what we learned from the premiere, shall we?

Jimmy has a plan

The plan Jimmy has is to get his law license, but it won’t be easy. He needs to work for a firm first to get his feet wet and learn the ins and outs of the law. The problem is that he’s up against Chuck, who Jimmy’s boss is secretly helping by giving him pointers on how to pass the bar exam. Unfortunately for Jimmy, his boss isn’t actually all that helpful. She doesn’t give much guidance beyond telling him what not to do, but she can’t do anything when Jimmy gets into trouble.
Jimmy must figure out a way to really stand out from the competition in order for his plan to succeed. In order for him to become more influential than Chuck, he needs allies on his team and connections with some powerful people who are willing to help him out in return for favors down the line.

Chuck has a plan

After the show opens with a montage of Jimmy’s past, it shows Chuck standing in the hallway on a ladder looking down at a framed diploma that says “Hamlin, Hamlin & McGill”. This image is important because it helps us understand what role Jimmy has to play in this firm. He’s not just there to help out Chuck, he’s there to learn how to be a lawyer. But as he learns about the day-to-day workings of his new job, he notices something suspicious, which leads him to investigate Chuck and Kim.
Who is Chuck?
We finally get an idea of who Chuck is when we see him giving his speech at the end of the episode. It only took two episodes for Better Call Saul Season 1 Episode 1 for us to start figuring out all about this man. Right now, we know that he’s got a lot going on in his life and that he’s trying to make things happen for himself. But what are they? We don’t know yet because we’re getting into the first episode of this series after all!

Mike has a plan

Jimmy McGill has a plan. And it’s a good one. He wants to become a lawyer and he knows that this is the first step in his plan: working for Hamlin, Hamlin & McGill, a law firm that is upstanding in the eyes of society. However, although Jimmy has a plan, he doesn’t have all the pieces yet to make it work. He’s not quite ready and he needs help from Chuck who has something planned of his own.

Kim has a plan

One of the most interesting parts of the premiere was Kim’s plan to help Jimmy get his law license. She did it all from behind-the-scenes and it doesn’t seem to be working out so well. I’m glad that she’s willing to take risks like this, but I’m not sure if it will pay off for her in the long run.

The McGill family is back together

This is a big moment for Jimmy McGill in an interesting episode. We’ve seen him struggle with his brother Chuck, but he doesn’t want to lose the one thing that has kept them together all this time: their family name. Chuck was the one who always had the power in the relationship and took it away from Jimmy, so it’s understandable that this would be important to him. He wants to make sure they’re not just two McGill brothers now, but a whole McGill family again.

The future of Better Call Saul is uncertain, but it’s an interesting one right now.

Jimmy McGill’s (Bob O’Malley) plan to become a lawyer is going well so far, but he might not have much future ahead of him if he doesn’t keep his nose clean. Chuck McGill (Michael McKean) is Jimmy’s old partner and they have been on the same page since they were kids. Their relationship has always been rocky, but that becomes even more apparent in this episode. As Kim Wexler (Rhea Seehorn) struggles to make her mark as one of the top lawyers in the country, she can’t help but feel threatened by Jimmy and Chuck. There are some twists and turns in this episode that will likely affect the rest of the season, so it’ll be interesting to see where it goes from here.
