Everyone has that friend who is always down to get weird and crazy. Well, this might be one of the weirder things you could do for that special someone—and it’s perfect if you know someone who is a garbage man or who lives in an older home with a garbage compactor. You see, many apartment complexes don’t have garbage men anymore, so they instead have what’s called a “compactor attendant.” These attendants are hired to take your trash and compact it into the compactor at the end of each week. So what does this mean for you? It means that you can make your garbage man’s week just by giving him a cupcake to his face (and probably not much more than that). Here’s how to give a cupcake to the garbage man and make their day:

Make the Cupcakes

The best part about this is that you don’t need to give a lot of effort or time to make these cupcakes—they are super easy and can be whipped up in 10 minutes.
You’ll need:
1 white cake mix
1 can of vanilla frosting
1 can of chocolate frosting
2 bottles of pink food coloring
A cake pan with a diameter of at least 6 inches (for the cupcake base)
A pitcher and measuring cups (if you want to make your own milk shake mix)
2-inch round cookie cutter
2 8-inch round cookie cutter A bag for the cupcakes once they are baked A plastic knife for cutting the cake batter into circle shapes. I recommend getting a serrated knife because it will cut through the cake better than a straight one. You also might want to get some parchment paper so that your cakes turn out easier and more uniformed.

Wrap the Cake in Paper and Tape

First, wrap the cake in paper and tape it. The wrapper is important because it will keep the cake from getting squished in the garbage compactor. If you’re feeling crafty, you can also decorate the wrapper to make it more fun!

Get Some Gum Wrappers

The first part of this little project is getting gum wrappers. The easiest way to do that is to find an old pack of gum, toss it in the trash, and wait for someone (a garbage man, a child) to take it out. This is where you can get your gum wrappers.

Add Some Candy Drops or Mini Marshmallows

When you put your cupcake in the trash can, it’s likely to get compacted with some other trash. So before you put the lid on, take a few minutes to scatter a little bit of this yummy stuff. Make sure you toss in some candy drops or mini marshmallows—something they’ll actually like.

Add Some Yummy Filling

First, you’ll need to make a cupcake. Now, these are not your ordinary cupcakes—these are ones with a surprise inside. You’re going to want to use an oven-safe container—you could use a muffin tin, but it’s always nice to have the extra space in case there’s any leftover batter. Next, you’ll want to fill the cake with whatever filling you prefer. I personally like frosting of my birthday cakes, but whipped cream or pudding would also work well.

Finish It Off with a Bow Tie or Ribbon

If you’re giving a cupcake to the garbage man, you have to add some flair. So why not wrap up your gift with a bow tie or ribbon? You can even put a little note in the middle that says “Happy Birthday.” It’ll be a fun surprise for your garbage man when they open up their afternoon trash!
BONUS: Make sure it’s not an apple cake
The easiest way to make this happen is by buying them an iced cupcake from your favorite bakery, but if they don’t live close enough or don’t have time to pick one up, try making one yourself. Keep in mind that you might want to avoid using blueberries or pineapple because that could get mixed into the trash compactor and cause problems.

Don’t Forget the Trash Bag!

First of all, you need to get your hands on some cupcakes. There are many ways you can do this.
1) Order them online from Amazon, or
2) Visit a bakery that offers pre-made cupcakes for sale, or
3) Ask for one for free at a restaurant
Once you’ve got the cupcakes in hand, it’s time to get creative and bake some garbage men faces into the cake. If you don’t want to invest too much time in the project, use a simple red and white frosting to make your design or use a store-bought frosting kit like Wilton. The key is to make sure the cake is easily accessible so your friend can have an easy time eating it. Next, take out the trash bag (see #3 above). This will be handy for when your friend gets home with his compactor and can’t fit any more cake into his mouth…

So, no matter what you are doing to make someone else’s day a little sweeter, remember that this person is making yours as well. It’s a small gesture that can have a big impact. It’s something you are doing for someone else. And when you’re doing something nice for someone else, you’re also giving yourself a gift.
What is your favorite way to make someone else’s day?
