Aired in two parts on PBS, the movie tells the story of a Jewish family in Italy who discovers that their son has been kidnapped by priests and raised as a Christian. The kidnapping took place when six-year-old Edgardo Mortara was playing with his siblings near the local church.
The decision to take Edgardo was made by a few priests who thought he would be better off as a Catholic. His parents were forced to give up their son for adoption and raise their other four children as Catholics.
In 1858, after having read about the case, Pope Pius IX agreed to allow his return back to Judaism. Edgardo was given his original name back and reunited with his parents after 26 years apart from them.
