I’ll be the first to admit that writing is not always easy. It requires you to be patient, self-reflective, and most of all, it requires you to face your fears. Some days it feels like you have no idea where you are going or what you should write next. However, this is where it gets easier; the more time we spend on something the easier it gets. And surprisingly enough, one of the easiest ways to get inspired to write is by listening to a song.
Let me explain: A lot of us spend so much time alone in our heads that we rarely take time out to listen and think about what we hear. The silence can feel suffocating at times and isolating from everything else in the world, which can make getting inspired a struggle at times; however, there are some things that we need to do in order to keep sane and happy again.
Take a walk
I cannot stress enough how important it is to not just listen to music, but also to take a walk while listening. It can be hard to leave the comfort of our own home and head out in public, especially when we are feeling overwhelmed. However, all it takes is one walk outside and you will feel refreshed again. Even if you are having a bad day and don’t want to go anywhere, try taking a short walk around your neighborhood or block. You’ll quickly forget about everything that is going on outside of your door and you’ll be able to re-focus on what really matters: yourself.
Listen to music while you write
Music is an excellent way to help you stay inspired. It can have a powerful impact on our moods, so listening to music while writing helps us maintain the positive energy we need in order to be productive. This is why many people listen to music when they work out and study. In addition, it’s proven that listening to your favorite songs can help increase your productivity by 40 percent.
In my opinion, the song that inspired me was “I’d Rather Be With You” by Adele because it’s one of my favorite songs. I like it mostly because it has a sad and beautiful story behind it that takes place over a long period of time. When I listen to this song, I see myself being with someone who means everything to me; this person would never hurt me or leave me and we would always find our way back together. The song always makes me feel nostalgic, even though it doesn’t take place in the present day.
So if you’re struggling with getting motivated and staying focused on your writing project then try listening to some music before starting your work for the day!
Read your favourite authors
and listen to your favourite songs
It is imperative that we take time out of our day to read and listen to what inspires us. This is something that I’m guilty of not doing enough. I would often zone out in my head and only be able to think about the books I’m reading or the songs I’m listening to. However, music can help you get creative juices flowing, which is why it should be a part of your routine. In fact, there are some songs that have inspired me so much that I would go write about it in a blog post or book chapter (like The Police’s “Message in a Bottle”).
So if you’re feeling stuck, try listening to some rad beats from your playlist or read a heartfelt book. It might just inspire you to write something new!
The song that inspired me was Ed Sheeran’s “Thinking Out Loud”.
Go on a hike or camp out with friends
Depending on the time of year, it’s a good idea to get outside and go on hikes or camp out with friends. Taking time to do this is a good way to clear your mind and find inspiration. Sometimes you can spend hours in nature without even thinking about what you are listening to or reading. The beauty of nature can be cathartic at times and when we find ourselves lost in our thoughts, it’s best to take a break from all that thinking.
Another option is to watch a movie or TV series that inspires you. This is another way to get inspiration when you don’t feel like doing anything else yet. Just remember that whatever it is you’re going through may be temporary, so take your time and don’t worry about everything being perfect before launching into something new.
Do something you’re not good at before you write
This might sound a little strange, but it’s really important. I know that it can feel like an extra step to do something you’re not good at before you write, but trust me when I say that this is a necessary step to get your creativity going again. The best way to do this would be to start a journal or blog, which will help you focus on the idea of writing and eventually get the words flowing again.
Another way to get your creative juices flowing is by doing something physically active. This can be anything from running around the block three times, going for a walk outside, or even doing some push ups. It doesn’t have to be anything extreme; just getting out and moving can help you recover from writer’s block much more quickly.
Find your voice
One of the most important things you can do to get inspired to write is to find your voice. It might sound simple and easy, but it takes a lot of work. Find out who you are as a person and what makes you unique. Then, dig deep into that; make sure that you are exploring all of the things that make up who you are. You need to find the things that inspire you, whether it be music, art, or fashion. Once you have found these voices within yourself, then it’s time to start writing again because this is when we can finally tap into our true selves and start writing with authenticity.
